Langisjór & Eldgjá
If you crave silence, space, and scenery that few ever witness, Langisjór and Eldgjá are for you. Tucked deep in Iceland’s wild interior, these highland gems deliver a raw and serene experience far from the crowds.
Langisjór is a long, deep, glacier-fed lake stretching over 20 kilometers, surrounded by rugged ridgelines, volcanic plateaus, and untouched wilderness. It’s considered one of Iceland’s most beautiful and pristine lakes — with views so surreal they feel imagined.
From nearby peaks like Súlan or Sveinstindur, hikers are rewarded with jaw-dropping panoramas over the turquoise waters below, framed by black volcanic sands and green moss-covered hills.
Just east of Langisjór lies Eldgjá, a dramatic volcanic fissure stretching over 40 kilometers, carved out during a massive 10th-century eruption. It’s Iceland’s largest volcanic canyon, with towering cliffs, mossy walls, and hidden waterfalls like Ófærufoss, which cascades elegantly into the gorge.
Walking through Eldgjá feels like descending into a forgotten world — vast, green, and echoing with geological power.
